Howard’s 1st 2 years were difficult as he would play extensive hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by being an assistant for the poker players. He judged he might improve his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more sleep and concentrate more on poker.
The real advancement in his game happened when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would often wager against one another. Howard had access into several of the greatest players in chess. With their assistance, he would sharpen his cunning thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL holdem.
He also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was a great student of poker as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct decision. He told Annie to move out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard headed to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
