Omaha Hi/Low: General Overview

[ English ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has grown in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha/8 starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of betting follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. A further round of betting ensues. After all the players have either called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting happens at which point the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of entrants often get baffled. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must use exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same notion in nearly every poker game.

The low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem difficult initially, after a few hands you will be able to get the basic subtleties of the game easily enough. Since you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha hi low provides an amazing array of betting choices and because you have many individuals battling for the high, along with a few trying for the low. If you prefer a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
