Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he loved playing various card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming very aggressive in these card games while competing against his father. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to play some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were tough as he played many hours and fail to win most times. He made some additional money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he could boost his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more sleep and focus even more on poker.

The real advancement in his game happened when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would regularly wager against one another. Howard had access into a few of the greatest minds in chess. With their assistance, he would hone his strategic thinking skills. Howard applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL hold’em.

He also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was a great student of the game as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker arena ever. He moved to Sin City in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in money games for the successive decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
